Table of Contents
1. Doraemon Main Characters and its Birth Story
Doraemon first began as a manga, then onto animation, films and now you can see him on a wide variety of products. Fujiko. F. Fujio created this ever popular cat-shaped robot back in the 1970s. Doraemon came from the 22nd century to support Nobita, they develop friendship and chose to stay together even after Doraemon achieved his assignment.
The story develops basically around Nobita’s difficult situation, which he asked himself and Nobita asks Doraemon to help him by secret gadgets, handles the situation somehow, but Nobita has to pay the price in the end. Unique Doraemon main characters make a story rich, you can empathize with someone in it.
2. Doraemon Main Characters
He’s the title character, but he’s just there for the sake of helping Nobita and that’s his entire purpose in the story most of the time. He is a cat-like robot created by the Matsushiba robot company, hence born on September 3, 2112, and is sent back in time by Sewashi to aid Nobita.
Originally, his assignment was to take care of Sewashi. While his main purpose is to aid Nobita, they share the equal friendship, enjoy playing together and even goes too far together.
While Nobita is away for the school, Doraemon supports Nobita’s mom at home. Once he played bowls and broke the mirror stand, which was a disaster.
Doraemon possesses a fourth-dimensional pocket from which he can acquire various kinds of futuristic tools, gadgets, and playthings from a future department store. He’s usually endlessly patient and tries to be helpful, but when Nobita goes too far, he won’t hesitate to punish him.
His feet are an inch above all the time, no need for shoes. Subtle anti-gravity on his skin keeps him clean by just an easy wipe. He doesn’t have ears on his head, yet his real ears are in the temporal area. Usually, the ears of a cat-shaped robot like Doraemon, are sound collectors working as an aide.
He used to have 20 times better-smelling abilities with his red round nose, but it’s out of function now. The whiskers are also out of function, it’s just a decoration now and when it shivers, which is a sign he is hiding something.
Doraemon’s hands are called
Petari Hands, which can let him stick to anywhere, even on the ceilings and his bell used to function as attracting cats, but it’s out of order. Yet it looks like he has an immense trust among neighboring cats, he is often asked to do some favor for them.
He is a big eater and hopelessly in love with
Dorayaki, which is a well-known fact. He also likes Mochi (rice cakes) and watermelon, too. He easily falls in love not only with female cats but also girls as well.
Doraemon takes a really good care of himself, he has his comb and dryer (ordinary ones) in his pocket. He has a spare pocket in case of damaged or lost.
Although many parts of him are out of function, his body is sturdy and recovers quickly even under the condition an ordinary person would get hurt badly.
He sleeps in Nobita’s Oshi-Ire (Japanese closet). Don’t call him a tanuki (raccoon) or anything that’s not a cat which would definitely hurt his pride.
Nobita is a fourth grader, born on 7, August, and the only child to his parents. Nobita’s character flaws are endless: he is lazy, uncoordinated, dim-witted, frail, plain-looking, unlucky, and bad at sports. However, those flaws we can relate ourselves to him greatly among the other Doraemon main characters.
The protagonist of the story, a young, loser boy who is always at an end of school bully, jealousy, or his own selfishness, and have always relied on Doraemon’s gadget as his solution to a problem rather than improving himself.
However, he is notably more kind and heroic than the rest of the gang when the situation calls for it.
He used to live with his grandmother, who she was really kind and loved him. This is very opposite of his mother, who is very strict to Nobita.
Beaten by Giant, scolded by the teacher and by his mother, bitten by a dog and fell into a ditch, which is an ordinary day of Nobita.
What’s good about him is, again, his kindness. That’s the reason why Doraemon had befriended him despite all the flaws he has.
One of his good points is that he doesn’t linger on the past. Once his grandmother gave Nobita a Daruma doll as a gift, telling to stand up again with his might, even he takes a tumble like a Daruma doll. Nobita promised her that he would be that strong to his grandmother.
He is good at making string figures and surprisingly enough, Nobita is excellent at shooting which fought off the enemy. Other talents worth mentioning to him is he can sleep within a second. According to him, the knack of falling asleep in a second is to empty your mind. Sounds like Zen here.
Nobita is definitely the one with the richest personality holding the opposite qualities among other Doraemon main characters.
Shizuka-chan, the local love interest, who is popular among every boy in town starting with Nobita. She is the court of conscience of the Doraemon main characters.
She’s a soft-spoken, nature loving, and a caring girly girl who addresses the failure hero Nobita with honorifics. Her true passions are sweet potatoes and the violin, in which her playing is as atrocious as Jai-an’s singing.
Sizuka-chan is talented in sports, won over Nobita on Sumo-wrestling and got the third place in a marathon.
She seems to spend much of her free time bathing, definitely more than twice in a day. And almost every time she gets in the bath, Nobita ends up accidentally walking in thanks to Doraemon’s gadgets, she screams
You, naughty boy! She made one of her dreams come true when she made herself really small with a small light and bathed in a 100 % milk bath.
Takeshi Goda aka Jai-an
Takeshi is better-known for his nickname
Jai-an (Giant) for his brawn and tendency to get things by his ways. The local big bully, he acts as the big guy of the gang who we always have one in every classroom. His victims are every boy in his neighborhood, though he picks on Nobita the most.
He also frequently steals other children’s toys and books under the pretext of
borrowing them, unless the toy is damaged. However, he does not hesitate to help Nobita and his friends when they are in real trouble which is something only he can do among all other Doraemon main characters.
The only person Jai-an is truly afraid of is his mother while he is really kind to his little sister, Jai-ko. Like Nobita, he is a more honorable person when the situation calls for it. Once he helped Nobita to find his lost school bag under the hard rain by running after the truck with all his energy, which carrying the bag.
He loves singing and hold a singing recital periodically, yet his singing ability is really bad it can damage listener’s ears who unfairly forced listening to it which are usually Nobita and Suneo. Whoever gives him a compliment, he calls them
friend of his heart.
Surprisingly enough, Giant likes cooking, which he is not good at, one time he almost died of trying his creation.
It’s said there is a model person of Giant from the childhood of Fujiko F. Fujio, the boss of the kids. On the contrary, to Jai-an in Doraemon, this real person was not a bully but took a good care of others. We can estimate that good side of Jai-an come from this person.
Suneo is a son of a rich family, who never runs short of showing off his wealth. He is often seen with Jai-an, serving as his lackey while they bully Nobita together. Though rich and tricky, he is physically very short and is a coward.
Perhaps Suneo is another figure we can relate ourselves to easily for his a cunning maneuver or flattering someone to get his own way among the Doraemon main characters.
He tends to show off his expensive stuff to Giant, Nobita, and Shizuka-chan, telling them they can use them or experience it with him. When everybody gets excited, Suneo tells Nobita that only he can’t do it because the thing allows only three people. This is a typical introductory scenario of Doraemon. Being humiliated, Nobita comes to Doraemon asking him to help him out.
Lying is second nature to Suneo. He literally cannot go a day without lying about something, which bites him in the butt when he was given a device that makes all his lies true.
Other kids dislike him because of his cunning and slick nature while adults like him due to his know how to swim the tide.
Suneo has an extensive knowledge of science and is a talented artist and designer. He can build elaborate plastic models easily and fly a radio control plane without a problem.
A running gag in the series is that he cries for his
Mama in every situation where he gets himself into a trouble.
3. Doraemon on the Mission
How and why Doraemon came from the 22nd century to support Nobita? Well, it began like this. Nobita was lounging in his room on new years, the desk drawer suddenly popped up and there it went with this funny robot and a kid who claims he is Nobita’s grandchildren, Sewashi.
According to Sewashi, Grown-up Nobita had no good luck in the future, a lot of troubles. He started his own company since nobody hired him, yet that company went down, got in a deep debt, his children and grandchildren were in troubles for it…
So Sewashi brought this cat-shaped robot, Doraemon, to change the past to make their lives better. So, first off,
caretaker Doraemon came to rescue
4. How Doraemon Came to Life
Fujiko. F. Fujio was in deep trouble that his new manga series would start soon, yet he had not come up with any ideas at the time. He blew bubbles and mused the thoughts like it’d be great if he had a useful device which could give him new ideas… He was a usual suspect once he wasted his time picking fleas from a cat. But the fated day had come.
In the morning of the deadline for his new series of manga,
I’d be damned! Nothing came up to me, I’m done! I’m ruined! He ran down the stairs screaming, he stumbled upon daughter’s tumbler (self-righting doll), something sparked about a cat and a tumbler had united in his head. That was the moment
Doraemon was born. The concept is to help support failure with gadgets… it was he who wanted to be helped desperately. Nobita is Fujiko. F. Fujio himself. He was no good at any sport and always drew manga in his childhood.
Time-prove patterns of a story as one is endowed with special talent, use its power in a wrong way and have to pay the price for it, very classic.
What’s innovative about it is Fujiko used a tool/gadget as a special talent in old myth. You don’t have to be in a kingdom where a princess kidnapped or need to go slay the dragon, but right here right at this place with a single tool/gadget, the drama starts to happen and mundane turn into a wonderland.
For your information, Doraemon used to be yellow and have ears which he doesn’t have now at the time he was created. He was originally born as a babysitting cat-shaped robot. His ears were bitten off by accident and with the wrong treatment at the hospital, he lost his ears permanently, but he can hear ok.
Trying to come back up, he took he thought was energy potion, but it was tragedy potion and he kept crying three days in a row. As a result of shivering vigorously and tirelessly while he was crying, his yellow-colored paint flaked off, he turned to be blue appearance.
Doraemon didn’t score high in the robot training school and a girl cat encouraged him with
Dorayaki, Japanese red bean-jam pancake since then Dorayaki had become Doraemon’s favorite confection which all Doraemon main characters come to know. Its taste relates to his first love.
5. Secret Gadget in 4-D Pocket
Doraemon has a 4-D pocket on his stomach, which stocks numerous useful gadgets which can help solve the problem, but it has negative sides as well as they would learn along the way.
What if Box
It looks like a telephone box which used to be everywhere in town, but you don’t see them often now. But its effect is amazing. Doraemon explains it as an experimental box. The concept is a parallel world.
You get in this box, pick up the receiver and tell it what you want. Bell rings, voila! The world you imagined is in front of your eyes. When you don’t want it anymore, you tell it, then it’s gone. You can go to another world where the dead is alive.
Anything you can imagine, it becomes reality. Unless your imagination runs dry, you can have an exciting life. This is the gadget you can experience
What if the world is like…?
A piece of konjac jelly, which enables you to understand and speak any known language in the universe. Robots can’t eat it, but you put the jelly on him, it can enjoy its benefit. The effect begins after the person ingests the jelly, but the duration of the effect is unknown. You can even read the transcript on papers. And it’s effective not only in human languages, but also it covers on animals, aliens, and robots.
This is a notebook which makes all your written dreams come true, so Doraemon claims. It brings to realization with a wide range of wishes in various levels. You have to edit your wish lines to an extent where you can’t interpret otherwise. Unless you make your wishes very clear, some unexpected things can happen from your obscure expressions.
Also, there’s a risk even on the way to see your desired result, some unfavorable things can happen in a kind of chain reaction. Sounds similar to the idea of making a
vision board, they say writing down your desire brings the result even firmer and faster.
But the difference is, with Doraemon’s scheduling notebook, it’ll become 100% reality, you couldn’t be too careful about what you ask for.
Fujiko F. Fujio produced a lot of Doraemon films. In these films, Fujiko’s world view and thoughts are projected vividly and profoundly. Among many, Nobita’s Little Star Wars is one of the notable ones. It’s an homage for George Lucas’ Star Wars trilogy. It depicts an encounter and friendship with an alien, dictated world, adventure, and war. Doraemon, Nobita, and friends square up for the battle to take back befriended alien with gadgets and radio-controlled tank…
7. Witty Remarks
Doraemon and other Doraemon main characters more than often say acute and insightful lines. Here’s just a few of them we may be able to learn something from.

8. International Reception
Some people says Doraemon does not have a good effect on kids since Nobita always depends on Doraemon’s gadgets to tackle the problem instead of trying to solve it himself. Which claims is correct to some extent.
Usually, you project yourself on Nobita, top of the Doraemon main characters, who is not good at anything but has a pure heart and gentle to plants and animals. Even after kids grew up, Nobita remains Nobita, but he can tell us things about ourselves with all those Doramon main characters.
There would be always useful, convenient tools, the thing about it is how to use them matters. What DORAEMON tells us is the rich imagination which can create anything. However, if you abuse the tools and go against the goodwill, you have to pay the price in the end. It is very practical, isn’t it?
Doraemon once went back to his future, the place he came from, but came back to Nobita on his own will. He chose to stay with Nobita. A.I. with human, it is not the enemy, nor friend in the first place, but once they have a rapport and build the relationship, shared experiences and memories, they would become inseparable… It almost sounds like a prophet for this modern time.
How this is going to be like in the near future, that’s what we don’t know of and currently, we are living and experiencing the period ourselves. Doraemon was truly a visionary manga. He has unconditional love for imperfect human beings; he knows he is an imperfect robot himself. How can we love anyone or anything which doesn’t have any imperfection?
We need someone who is cornered with the deadline and come up with
a seemingly ridiculous idea, so we know what the future holds. If we had
Anywhere Door, we would be able to peek the future for both cats and humans…?
